The 40-year-old Dungannon man was badly injured during the Supertwins race at the North West 200 on May 12 but appeared to be improving.

Last week he was interviewed and photographed in his hospital bed and was in a positive mood. However, a Belfast Trust spokesman said on Sunday that Farquhar had “returned to ICU and he is seriously ill”.

Writing in today’s Keep ’er Lit, News Letter motorcycling correspondent Kyle White describes Farquhar’s crash as one of the “dark clouds” that overshadowed this year’s race meeting.

A funeral service for the rider who lost his life at the same event, Malachi Mitchell-Thomas, will be held at Charnock Richard in Lancashire later today.

Meanwhile, a man in his early 40s who was involved in a road collision in Limavady on Saturday was last night still critically ill.
