Response to traffic calming calls

ROADS Service have said they will continue to keep an eye on the road outside St Colman's Primary School in Annaclone.

Their statement comes following fears that a child could be knocked down on the Monteith Road in the village.

A DRD Spokesperson said, "In 07/08 the 'Safer Routes to School' was introduced outside St. Colman's Primary School which provided flashing warning signs and enhanced road markings to improve driver awareness of the need to reduce speed when approaching the school during periods when pupils are arriving and departing.

“This road has been assessed and at present is not on the programme of works for traffic calming measure.

“Roads Service will continue to monitor activity on the road.”

Last week Councillor Seamus Doyle called for extra traffic calming measures, such as narrowing down the road or putting in speed bumps.

“The speed limit there is currently 30 miles per hour and that begins just outside the school, but drivers tend to ignore it and fly on anyway,” he said.

“For that reason I would also appeal to drivers to slow down and watch their speed before somebody is hurt or killed.”
