Residents furious over fouling problem

Residents in Main Street Donaghcloney are calling foul over dog mess in the area, which they claim is putting people’s health at risk.

They say people are allowing their dogs to stray and foul on the footpaths, roads and in grass areas where children play. One resident who regularly walks along the street said: “There is so much dog mess on the street it’s hard to avoid standing on it and parents pushing prams or buggies have a difficult time avoiding it.”

They continued; “There is no excuse for people not picking up after their dog. I know there’s a lot of responsible dog owners but those people who are irresponsible and don’t clean up after their dog need to think about the consequences of them failing to lift the mess.”

Craigavon Borough Council has received numerous complaints about the issue of dog fouling in Main Street.

The council said: “Whether you are a dog owner or not, everyone agrees that dog fouling on the streets and in open spaces is extremely unpleasant and unacceptable. In spite of legislation and numerous campaigns, a few dog owners are giving their pets a bad name - simply because they are failing to clear up their animal’s mess.”

The concerned resident highlighted some facts about the danger of dog mess saying: “Pet waste is teaming with E. Coli and other harmful bacteria including faecal coliform bacteria, which causes serious kidney disorders, intestinal illness, cramps and diarrhoea in humans.

“Dog mess often contains roundworm larvae. If a human ingests a roundworm larva, it can migrate through the body causing disease to the brain, lungs, kidneys, liver, heart or eyes. So when people especially children, anything that has been in contact with dog faeces and then touch their mouths, they can become infected,” they explained.
