This free event has already received great interest from both local residents of the district and from those further afield.

“It is through working in partnership, that Banbridge District Council believes this special commemoration service and tree planting ceremony has come to fruition and is attracting a genuine interest from the public, who are keen to be part of this once in a lifetime occasion,” commented Council Chairman Councillor Marie Hamilton.

“I am particularly pleased that all of the district secondary schools will be represented. I believe it is important that young people are aware of this terrible time in our history.

The event is being led by the local clergy fellowship and compered by Mr Paul Clark.

The Commemorative service sees the participation of the five district branches of the Royal British Legions, (Banbridge, Dromore, Gilford, Loughbrickland and Rathfriland).

Ten World War II Veterans will also be in attendance.

“We welcome everyone to come along and be part of this commemorative and historic event and would encourage those who wish to have a seat to arrive early,” concluded Councillor Hamilton.
