The court heard that a police patrol on the A1 carriageway saw the defendant’s vehicle, which was displaying ‘R’ plates, travelling at speed.

They followed it for approximately one and a half miles and it reached speeds of around 95mph.

The spoke to Harvey and he admitted driving in and around 90mph.

A barrister representing the defendant said that in the past he had problems with substance abuse.

But, he added, Harvey presented himself unannounced at his grandfather’s door and asked to stay the night.

The barrister said that the next day the grandfather said they were prepared to help him if he would accept that help.

He explained the defendant had since developed skills at work and asked the court to give him a chance.
