Pupils display excellent road safety knowledge

Fifteen schools from throughout Newtownabbey took part in this year’s quiz, which was held in the Linen Suite, Mossley Mill on Tuesday, January 26.

The standard this year was very high, and the final results emphasised the fierce competition among the teams of P7 pupils.

Second place overall went to Fairview Primary School, with Mossgrove Primary School taking third spot.

John Wilson, PSNI, was the quizmaster and he was assisted by members of the Road Safety Committee. Inspector Gary McComb was also in attendance and addressed the children, stressing the importance of spreading the road safety message not only to other children but also to parents and other adults.

The chair of the committee, Mrs Pat Martin, welcomed the Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Cllr Thomas Hogg, who commented on the great response to the annual quiz from schools across Newtownabbey.

Cllr Hogg presented plaques to the top three teams, whilst Nichola Pearse of Cornmarket Insurance presented the brand new Cornmarket perpetual trophy to the winning team from Ballyclare PS. The old trophy, the Adelaide Cup, will take pride of place in the offices of Cornmarket Insurance.

We continue to reward drivers with additional car and motorbike insurance discounts if they successfully complete further driver training with IAM or BikeSafe. The Newtownabbey Road Safety Committee’s valuable contribution to road safety has our praise and support.”

Members of Newtownabbey Road Safety Committee expressed their thanks to the council for the free use of the facilities at Mossley Mill, and to the Mayor for the goody bags which each of the children were given after the quiz.

The committee also thanked the council for its ongoing financial support for the event, and Cornmarket Insurance Services for providing the trophy.

Newtownabbey Road Safety Committee is a voluntary organisation that aims to promote road safety in Newtownabbey. Membership is open to all residents and any issues of concern in relation to road safety matters can be raised with the committee.
