£1.4m paid to private landlords

PRIVATE landlords have been paid nearly £1.5m by the Housing Executive this financial year (2011/12) to provide temporary accommodation in Londonderry.

Housing Minister Nelson McCausland revealed a sharp hike in the use of private property this year.

In 2009/10 140 properties were used at a cost of £957,320. But this rose to 171 in 2010/11 at a cost of £1,169,272 and further to 210 in 2011/12 at a cost of £1,435,980.

Mr McCausland stated: “The Housing Executive has advised that, given the transient nature of this group, these costs are approximate as not all properties are occupied at all times and not all tenants are on full housing benefit.

“In addition, the figures are based on an average rent of £131.50 per week per property.”
