Praise comes in for council transport scheme

“Under the new scheme local community groups, with an annual income of less than £5000, can claim vouchers up to a value of £200 to assist with community transport costs,” explained the Sinn Fein candidate.

He said the work of DART (Down Armagh Rural Transport) to assist in the development is extremely important.

“Transport costs have always imposed a burden on those in rural communities and this has restricted their ability to engage with other groups and participate in communal activities outside their local area,” said Mr Curran.

“It is important that those in our society who are already suffering from social deprivation are given the opportunity to interact with others to exchange ideas and participate in larger social ventures.

“DART has filled a void in the transport system and has provided an important and essential service for people who were marginalised as a result of their social circumstances.

“This new service will not only provide local community groups with an important service it will play a role in ensuring the future of DART and the continuation of the essential services they already provide.”
