Special delivery for South Down MLA

UUP leadership contender and new dad of two, John McCallister, has thanked the emergency services who assisted him deliver his new son Harry.

The South Down assembly member had to perform the emergency procedure on the bathroom floor at his home after the couple were unable to reach the hospital in time.

The leadership contender has skipped campaigning to spend time with his wife, Jane, and their newborn son, Harry James, who weighed 7lbs 10oz.

“The 999 operator talked me through what to do and I did it. There was no way this boy was waiting until we got to hospital,” he said.

“Harry made an appearance in the family bathroom.”

“Jane and Harry are now at Craigavon Area Hospital and doing great. I’ll never forget this morning and I am still in shock. But it was a wonderful outcome and we are thrilled with wee Harry who will be a little brother to Molly.

“What a busy week, now the leadership on Saturday.”
