New leisure centre opening date hit by crisis

There is ‘no definitive’ opening date for the South Lake Leisure Centre, Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough councillors have been informed.

At Thursday night’s virtual meeting, Lurgan Councillor Joe Nelson asked for an update on the £35 million project.

His question was addressed by Strategic Director Mark Parkinson who informed council that, in the current circumstances, no new opening date has been set.

“Contractors started [at the SLLC] two weeks ago, we went through working practices as our number one consideration is health and safety,” said the Director.

“Going through the works programme I think no definitive date [for opening] has been set, as that work is still ongoing.”
