Green Apple award for council

The Green Apple Awards showcase the best examples of effective, innovative and creative approaches to sustainability, and aim bring about positive change in the field of environmental practice. The awards team search the globe every year in a bid to recognise, reward and promote environmental excellence and inspire and motivate others.

The award was made for the council’s remodelled commercial waste collection service, which provides kerbside collection of recyclable materials from businesses, schools, churches and voluntary organisations.

By promoting the recycling of both mixed dry recyclable materials and organic garden and food waste, the new scheme provides financially hard pressed businesses and organisations with the opportunity to significantly reduce their waste collection bills as well as contribute to environmental protection.

Councillor Carol Black, Chairman of the Council’s Environmental Services Committee, commented “It was an absolute privilege to have been able to attend this event at the House of Commons and to receive the International Green Apple Award on behalf of the council.

“Banbridge District Council has proven once again that size doesn’t always matter when it comes to achievement.

“In winning this award, our council and its residents have succeeded against numerous other UK and International organisations in demonstrating that we can lead the way on environmental achievement. I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to both the council officers and all the businesses, schools, churches and other service users who have worked so well together to make this new scheme such an award winning success.”
