Police focusing on rural crimes in area

During February police will be focusing on rural crimes across E District which also incorporates Armagh, Craigavon and Newry and Mourne,

Police have listened to concerns from the farming community and have responded with a targeted response to tackling thefts of farm machinery and providing advice and guidance on protecting your property and livestock.

Officers will conduct targeted patrols to provide a visible presence in rural areas to detect and deter crime.

Police will also visit members of the rural community to listen to their concerns and provide advice and guidance on crime prevention measures.

A trailer marking and Farm Watch event will take place in Annalong on Thursday February 13.

E District Commander, Chief Superintendent Sam Cordner, said: “We understand that rural crime affects the very livelihood of victims.

“We want to do all we can to make the rural community feel safe and reassure them that we are taking steps to tackle the theft of machinery and livestock.”

He continued: “We are also asking the rural community for their support.

“Taking measures to secure your home, livestock, buildings and machinery are the first step in lessening your chance of becoming a victim of crime. “We have found that machinery with trackers fitted are less likely to be stolen and that security lighting and locked buildings can often prove to be a deterrent to criminals.

“Information from the community is vital in helping us address rural crime.”

Mr Cordner added: “There is a large rural community across E District and the people who live there know their own area best.

“If you notice something which does not look right, are aware of machinery moving at odd times or notice unusual attention being paid to livestock in fields, phone police.

“We need this information to target our resources and respond in the best way.

“We would much rather take the time to check out a call that proves to show nothing untoward than miss an opportunity to stop a crime or catch criminals in the act.”
