Police deliver ‘Consequences of Crime’ project

The news was revealed during a recent District Policing Partnership meeting held at Riada House.

The report explained: ‘The project was intended to steer young people away from behaviour that is likely to result in court appearances and a criminal record.

‘During the previous two months Police enrolled youths for this project using attendance at the workshops as a ‘penalty’ for minor offences that they had committed, using the new discretionary powers available. A total of 18 youths participated in the programme which had 3 workshops and then a reward for participation. During the first workshop Officers focused on how the Criminal Justice system works and the wider consequences of getting involved with the Police.

‘The second workshop was delivered by a member of the Northern Ireland Prison Service regarding the prison system and what happened when a Court imposes a custodial sentence. Finally a trip to Magilligan Prison and an opportunity to see real prison conditions and listen to an informative talk by Prison Officers. As a reward for their participation the young people were treated to a visit to McDonalds restaurant on their way home.

‘Police have been working closely with a group of young car enthusiasts known as the ‘Causeway Cruisers’ in partnership with Northern Regional College to promote road safety, responsible driving and car maintenance. On the 16 February 2011 a presentation was delivered to the group in partnership with Roads Policing Officers and Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service.’
