Poignant memories raise vital funds for police charity

A booklet entitled ‘Shared Memories’ was inspired by someone in Banbridge who said ‘Don’t let them forget us’, Jo-Anne Dobson said at the recent presentation.

The UUP MLA distributed the booklet through her Rathfriland Street office and said she was delighted to be able to present WPFA Secretary Hazel McCready with the funds raised.

“I know that ‘Shared Memories’ has its roots in Banbridge, when one local member said ‘Don’t let them forget us’ - a sentiment which echoed in the ears of fellow members and which ultimately led to the creation of the WPFA’s first booklet,” Jo-Anne said.

“Others may attempt to rewrite history, but I believe that WPFA’s booklet documents poignant stories of bravery and courage. It is a proud record and testament to the service, dedication and sacrifice of the brave men and women of the RUC.

“I was honoured to offer ‘Shared Memories’ through my Constituency Office and thank everyone who called in and supported this very worthy cause. Hazel McCready and the members of the Association have worked incredibly hard to produce and distribute a booklet which they can be truly proud of.

“I would also like to thank local Association member Nigel Lockhart for regularly supplying the office with Booklets and helping us to keep up with the high demand from the public.”

WPFA Secretary Hazel McCready, who accepted the cheque on behalf of the Association said she was overwhelmed by the level of support for the booklet and its cause, and added that there may be another publication.

“I am astonished with the support of the public and their encouraging and supportive comments,” said Hazel.

“There have already been discussions around a second booklet, because many poignant stories have yet to be told.

“Through ‘Shared Memories’ we hope that more people will see something of the depth of character of those police, their carers and families, who not only have endured catastrophic change and unfulfilled ambition in their lives, but continue to do so on a daily basis.

“I, on behalf of the WPFA would like to extend our gratitude to the public for their generosity, interest and encouragement.”

A limited number of the Shared Memories booklets are still available through Jo-Anne Dobson’s Banbridge Constituency Office at 18 Rathfriland Street 028 4066 9004. Although free of charge, a small donation to help the ongoing work of the Association would be greatly appreciated.
