Personal alarm scheme twist in LED saga

The controversy over the LED street lighting scheme has taken another twist, with a local councillor now helping to issue personal attack alarms to those who feel '˜vulnerable'.

DUP Councillor Carla Lockhart said residents are concerned about their safety and, in response, the Upper Bann Assembly candidate launched the scheme aimed at providing Personal Attack Alarms to anyone who is feeling vulnerable whilst out walking.

Cllr Lockhart said, “I am continuously being questioned about the lights and the safety of people out walking at night.

“I have decided to set up a scheme aimed at providing Personal Attack Alarms to the community for a small fee of £2.50 with a donation being made to Women’s Aid,” she stated.

“I launched this on Social Media at the weekend and the uptake has been very high.

“I am asking people to email me on [email protected] and I will then give direction on pick up points.

“This is a small token aimed at helping to restore community confidence.

“I am also working to push the Department to act in relation to this disastrous lighting scheme which has left areas of Banbridge in complete darkness.

“I would encourage people to contact me if they would like to avail of these personal attack alarms.”

In December, concerns over lighting in local areas led the local PUP branch and ACT initiative to conduct street patrols in the area.
