Oxfam gets £600 in jumper for joy event

Oxfam Ireland has received a significant donation of £600 collected from the fundraising efforts of the staff of the Spar store in Grand Street, Lisburn, as a contribution to lifting some of the world’s poorest people out of poverty.

Spar, Grand Street, staff member Anne Ferguson said: “Towards the end of last year one of our staff Eleanor Wilson suggested we do a charity collection for Oxfam Ireland.

“We thought that a sponsored ‘casual jumpers’ day would be great way for staff to put the fun into our fundraising, with everyone paying to wear their own favourite weird and wacky jumper designs while at work.

“We had fantastic support from the public too, with shoppers generously chipping in and donating via the collection buckets we placed in the shop.

“We are delighted to have been able to help Oxfam Ireland’s work and that this donation of £600 will now support some of the world’s poorest people.”

June Hewitt, manager of Oxfam Ireland’s Lisburn shop, received the cheque from the SPAR shop staff and presented them with thank you certificates on behalf of Oxfam.

“I would like to pay tribute to the wonderful contribution of the SPAR, Grand Street staff which will bring genuine long-term benefits to those who need our help the most,” said June.

“Staff from this Spar store in Lisburn are supporting Oxfam’s life-changing work worldwide, from emergency responses like the current crisis in South Sudan, where more than 5m people are currently in need of urgent humanitarian assistance, to long-term projects and campaigning that gives people in extreme poverty a voice.”

Oxfam Ireland has 51 stores across Ireland including specialist shops such as Oxfam Bridal, Oxfam Home and Oxfam Books. It accepts donations of everything from clothing, to CDs and vinyl, books and home accessories.
