Was a former ‘Mr. Ireland’

Retired Dromore coach-painter Desmond (Dessie) Newell died peacefully at his Church Street home recently, aged 70.

Mr Newell is survived by daughter, Mrs Jenny Dickson; brother, Mr Raymond Newell and sister, Mrs Iris Stephens (Canada).

A committed Christian and generous patron of the Dorcas Missionary Trust, a charity close to his heart, Dessie was known as a great sportsman, a former body-builder, four-time Mr Ulster title-holder and twice Mr Ireland.

Long after he stopped competitive body-building, Dessie continued to work out regularly and was a keen cyclist.

In June last year, at the age of 69, he completed the 108-mile Belfast-Dublin Maracycle.

Dessie was also a motorcycle and Formula One Grand Prix enthusiast.

His funeral took place from his daughter’s home at Maypole Park to Drumgooland Presbyterian Church Burying Ground, Dr Gilbert Egerton officiating.

Funeral arrangements were by John Gamble and donations in lieu of flowers, if desired, may be sent to John Gamble, Funeral Director, 7 Meeting Street, Dromore BT25 1AQ, for the Dorcas Missionary Trust.
