Former Editor of Banbridge Chronicle

Hugh as he was affectionately known to his many friends and acquaintances lived at 1 Legion Court, Banbridge with his wife Dorothy and he was a much loved father of Paul and Mark.

Hugh went to Primary School in the town and then to Banbridge Academy.

After leaving school he took up journalism and joined the staff at Banbridge Chronicle where he finished up as Editor of the paper.

After this he joined the staff of the Belfast Telegraph where he became one of their Sub Editors.

Hugh had a great love of music and those who remember the days of the Central Ballroom in Newcastle, where he played with the band during the summer months and the good old dance band music.

He was a member of Banbridge Silver Band and the South Ulster Concert Band where he played the trumpet.

He was a member of Magherally Masonic Lodge No 203 and worshipped in St Patrick Village Church where he became Church Warden.

He passed away peacefully on Tuesday last in Craigavon Area Hospital.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy, two sons Paul and Mark, daughter-in-law Carol, four grandchildren Scott, Neil, Jillian and Andrew, three great grandchildren Aaron, Isaac and Ethan, two sisters Kathleen (Newcastle) and Marie (Saintfield).

To these and all other relatives sincere sympathy has been extended.

The funeral took place from Holy Trinity Parish Church on Thursday to the New Cemetery.

His minister Archdeacon Roderic West paid a fitting tribute to Hugh’s life.

The hymns ‘Great is thy faithfulness’ and ‘Abide with me’ were sung. Mr Roly Anketel presided at the organ.

A large number of mourners came to pay their last respects.

Family flowers were placed on the grave and donations in lieu of flowers are being sent to William Bell and Co. Funeral Directors, 23 Kenlis Street, Banbridge, BT32 3LR for Seapatrick Parish Church Cheques made payable to William Bell 
and Co.).

William Bell and Co. had charge of the funeral arrangements.
