A dearly loved wife, mother and grandmother

Dromore woman Mrs. Norah Emily Adwena Martin (née Hall) passed away recently, aged 83, with family by her side.

Norah was the dearly loved wife of Ernie, mother of Walter, Anne, Joe, Adwena, Heather and Jeffrey and grandmother of Amy and James.

Born, the youngest of six children, on September 6, 1930, she grew up at Kilfullert between Dromore and Lurgan and went to school and church in Magheralin.

Musically gifted, she sang in Magheralin church choir and, mainly self taught, she could play hymns and technically difficult piano pieces.

As a young woman, Norah worked in Jameson’s, Dromore, where she met Ernie, and thus began their lifelong, loving partnership.

The two married on 6 January 1960 and set up home in Dromore.

Norah was a hard-working and caring wife and mother who devoted herself to her husband and children.

She was a woman of great insight, compassion, sensitivity and honesty. Possessing a remarkable brain and exceptional memory, she remembered hundreds of birthdays and anniversaries.

Talented at needlework, she was a good cook too, and liked baking.

In later years, Norah and Ernie managed to travel, visiting England often and travelling abroad to Venice, the South of France and Belgium.

In recent years, Norah’s devoted husband cared for her as her health declined, until be too fell ill last summer and Norah moved into Bannview Care Home, Banbridge.

Thee couple still managed many local trips together, especially at weekends, and on Valentine’s Day this year Ernie surprised Norah by taking her for a romantic lunch, driving for the first time in seven months.

In March, Norah fell, broke her leg and had to have a half-hip replacement. A week later, having contracted pneumonia, she returned to Craigavon Area hospital, where she spent nine weeks supported by family and friends before being released from her pain.

Norah’s funeral was held on June 8 in First Presbyterian (Non-Subscribing) Church, Dromore, where the Rev. Samuel Peden officiated. Burial took place in the adjoining church grounds, followed by refreshments provided by ladies of the Church in The Ervine Memorial Hall.
