Norman was one of first educational officers in NI

Norman was born on June 15 and was the dearly beloved husband of the late Muriel Jane Bingham who predeceased him almost five years ago.

Norman worked locally for many years as a School Attendance Officer and having obtained a social work qualification in the mid 1970s, became one of the first qualified Educational Welfare Officers in Northern Ireland, and diligently worked with many schools in the South Eastern Education and Library Board until his retirement in 1986.

Norman was centrally involved in Scarva Presbyterian Church where he served as Clerk of Session and as an Elder for many years. He also held numerous other offices in the church, and was a Foundation Member of the Indoor Bowling Club.

Norman had many interests, one of which was motor racing and building his own engines and cars with his late brother Harry, and more recently with his son Alwyn who also competed in motor racing. Norman was a former member of the Orange and Black Institutions, and had been a member of the Royal Blue Masonic Lodge No 173 for more than 66 years.

But Norman’s main interest was his family. He was exceptionally well loved by, and loving to, his late wife Muriel, son Alwyn, daughter-in-law Roberta and grandchildren David and Orla.

The funeral service was held in Scarva Presbyterian Church on Saturday March 3 when the Rev Patricia McBride paid a fitting tribute to Norman’s life.

The hymns “The Lord’s My Shepherd” and “ Abide With Me” were sung. Ann McCullough presided at the organ, Jane Stewart played violin solo, and Orla Bingham did a Bible reading.

The interment was in the adjoining Churchyard, and Dr. Roger Purce, former minister and friend of Norman’s, assisted the Rev Patricia McBride at the committal.

Family flowers were placed on the grave and donations in lieu of flowers are being sent to William Bell and Co., Funeral Directors, 23 Kenlis St.,Banbridge, BT323LR, for Scarva Presbyterian Church.

William Bell & Co. had charge of the funeral arrangements.
