The comment comes as the council launches a new scheme to catch fly-tippers across the councilarea - placing CCTV cameras in a number of locations to catch the culprits.

In a statement a spokesperson referred to a number of isolated instances in Banbridge, but said: ‘Thankfully the Banbridge legacy area does not have major issues regarding fly-tipping’.

The statement continued: “Isolated occurrences are reported, with the rural area between Scarva and Loughbrickland having seen a number fly tipping incidents in the past. The area surrounding Brookfield House in Banbridge has also been identified as a fly tipping location on occasion.

“CCTV cameras have been used in both these areas to assist in identifying offenders.”

In a bid to tackle what it described as a ‘serious issue’ Environmental Health Officers have identified ‘hotspot’ areas across the Borough and have erected CCTV cameras and signage to warn potential offenders.

“It will hopefully discourage them from dumping their waste illegally and instead take it to a recycling centre,” said a council spokesperson.

“Recently one of the cameras detected a local resident dumping unwanted tyres. Thanks to CCTV footage council officials were able to note the car registration, identify the owner and issue a Fixed Penalty Notice.

“An offender caught fly-tipping can currently face fines of up to a maximum of £50,000 depending on the severity of the case.”

Lord Mayor Councillor Darryn Causby said: “This council is very proactive when it comes to the issue of fly-tipping and we refuse to continue to let people get away with such irresponsible behaviour”.

“Fly-tipping is high on the priority list for Council’s Environmental Health Department due to the quantity and nature of the items that are dumped and the impact it can have on the environment. We will continue to monitor these hotspot areas but would also encourage residents to report incidents of fly-tipping, giving details of the location and if possible, of perpetrators.”

The council has nine recycling centres across the Borough that can be used by residents for the disposal of additional household waste.

A bulky refuse collection service is also available for larger items of household waste at charge of £6 per lift of up to 3 bulky household items.
