MP joins with opposition to one way planfor Dromore

Lagan Valley MP Jeffrey Donaldson has joined with the local DUP MLA’s to send a joint letter to the consultants who prepared the draft Masterplan for Dromore to caution them against the introduction of a one-way traffic system in the town centre.

Speaking on the letter sent last week, Mr Donaldson said that he was in favour of some of the more innovative proposals in the draft Master plan and as Chairman of the Dromore Partnership, he welcomed this contribution to the strategy for the regeneration of the town centre.

“Whilst I understand the motivation behind the proposed one-way system to ease traffic congestion, I believe that the negative effect on town centre trade could outweigh any perceived benefit,” said Mr Donaldson.

“Commerce in Dromore has struggled to survive in recent years with the economic downturn and the change in retail patterns.

“Anything that deters local people from shopping in the Square and its environs as well as the potential loss in car park spaces could result in the closure of more businesses and act as a disincentive for new ones being established.”

Mrs Brenda Hale MLA added: “We would ask the consultants to think again about this concept.

“There has been a very negative reaction from local traders and other residents to the idea of a one-way system.”
