A Men’s Shed is a community-based, non-commercial organisation with the aim of providing a safe, friendly and inclusive environment where men from all walks of life are able to gather and/or work on meaningful projects at their own pace, in their own time with the objective of advancing the health and well-being of those taking part.

According to Chairman Alex Swan the idea is to give mainly retired men somewhere to meet/work, or just have a cuppa if that’s all they’re looking for.

He said: “It’s really intended to fill the gap felt by many of us following retirement, where while we don’t miss the hassle and pressure of work, we miss the craic.

“Traditionally men are reluctant to talk about their emotions and that means that they usually don’t ask for help. In my experience problems are often identified at the workplace.

“Unfortunately, it has long been accepted by healthcare professionals that the gap left by retirement is often filled by loneliness, depression and an increased risk of isolation.”

A member of the Dundalk Men’s Shed said: “Women talk face to face, men shoulder to shoulder.”

The aims of the meeting are threefold: to raise awareness, to gain members, and to find suitable premises.
