Men charged with theft from ATMs

Two men have appeared in court charged with a catalogue of thefts from ATM machines in the Banbridge, Newry and Belfast areas.

The men, who both have addresses in Dublin, appeared at Newry Magistrates Court on Monday morning (November 4), where they faced a total of 88 charges, including theft and criminal damage.

The pair were also charged with the possession of articles for fraud in relation to a number of thefts from ATM machines using a cash trapping device between October 26 and November 1.

It is understood that it was the Danske Bank in Banbridge which was targeted.

The court heard that Marian Ciobancia, 32, from Laurel Court in Dublin and Vasile Orbisor, 27, whose address was also given as Laurel Court in Dublin, had been charged with theft, criminal damage and possession of articles under the Fraud Act 2006.

They were accused of targeting bank ATMs in a number of areas, including the Lisburn Road, University Road and Finaghy Road in Belfast, as well as in Banbridge and Newry.

Various banks fell victim to the thefts, including Danske Bank, Bank of Ireland and Ulster Bank.

The Prosecution Service is currently completing their file on the two defendants.

The two men have been remanded in custody and are due to reappear in court, via video link at a later date.
