McVeigh lands one-point success at Galgorm

IN the Winter Sweep played at Galgorm Castle Golf Club, Wilson McVeigh led the Low Section at the halfway point by two points from John McCarry with Phil Hanlon in close attendance another point away and he was followed by George McAuley two points further behind. Through 13 McVeigh was joined by McCarry with Hanlon moving up to within one point of the leaders. McAuley was another two points behind.

With one to play McVeigh held a one point advantage over Hanlon with McCarry and McAuley a further two points behind.

McVeigh finished with a par to hold off Hanlon who also finished with a par by one point. McCarry (birdie) took third place with G McAuley (par) just out of the placings.

In the High Section at the turn Neil Fitzsimmons led Aidan McNeill and Glenn Millar by two points followed by George McDowell and Raymond Ardis another point away. Trevor Monaghan and James Rea were at one point intervals respectively further behind.

After 12 McNeill had joined Fitzsimmons in the lead and they were being hard pressed by a trio of golfers – an improving Monaghan; Ardis and Millar) – one point behind. Rea and McDowell were at one point intervals respectively behind.

Approaching Beechers and with two holes to play Monaghan continued his forward momentum and joined McNeill in the lead with Fitzsimmons and Millar one point away followed by McDowell and Rea another point adrift.

Ardis was a further point behind. Monaghan finished with two pars to win by one point from McNeill (par, bogey) and leave the remainig five players to scramble for the remaining place.

McDowell (par, bogey); Rea (bogey, bogey); Ardis (par, par) and Glenn Millar (bogey, bogey) all finished level but Fitzsimmons who double bogeyed the penultimate hole swooped late with a ‘birdie’ to clinch the third place by one point.

David Kernohan won the Gross.
