McQuillan welcomes Irish Somme commemoration stamp

East Londonderry MLA Adrian McQuillan has welcomed the decision of the Irish postal service to commission a stamp to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme in 2016.

Commenting on the decision, Adrian McQuillan said: “I welcome this move by the Irish postal service to commemorate those who died at the Battle of the Somme in 1916.

“Thousands of men from across Ireland, unionist and nationalist, protestant and catholic, gave their lives during that battle and their ultimate sacrifice must never be forgotten.

“The commissioning of this stamp is another way in which we can honour and remember those who served with such valour. I commend also the Orange Order for their work with the An Post which has ensured that this will happen.

“As a former employee of Royal Mail, I am pleased that the organisation has already announced a five year commemorative stamp programme so that in the UK we can also recognise those that served and died during the First World War in this way and I hope that these will also include recognition of the Battle of the Somme.”
