McKee name to be added to war memorial

THE name of Lance Corporal Stephen McKee is to be added to the list of fallen heroes inscribed on Banbridge War Memorial.

The council plans to commemorate local people who have been killed in action since the end of the Second World War and the name of the Banbridge soldier who died earlier this year in Afghanistan is one of the first new additions.

A spokesperson for the council confirmed a request had been received for a name to be added to the war memorial in Newry Street and council officers would be following through with the request.

She added that the council would like to hear for anyone who knows of someone from the Banbridge area killed in action post World War II and whose name is not currently commemorated on the war memorial.

Since the original dedication of the war memorial on 30 June, 1923, local men and women have continued to serve their country in wars such as the Falklands, Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan, with some losing their lives during the various conflicts.

Requests for adding names to the war memorial can be made by anyone within the Banbridge District Council area or beyond.

They should be forwarded to the Chief Executive of Banbridge District Council at the Civic Building, Downshire Road, Banbridge, Co. Down BT32 3JY, no later than Friday 30 September 2011.
