McDonald Pipe Band on top of the world

McDonald Memorial Pipe Band were third in Grade 4B at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow Green on Saturday and the drum corps were placed first in drumming.

The McDonald Memorial Pipe Band was first founded in 1977 and set up in memory of the late David McDonald who played in the Battle of the Somme.

The band progressed to grade two but later folded. When it revived again, it did so five years ago. There are currently 24 members.

Over the past three years, the members who wear the traditional Macdonald of Clan Ranald tartan, have taken part in the World Finals. They were ranked tenth, ninth and third this year.

Pipe Major is Norman McDonald, Pipe Sergeant is Ronnie McDonald and the leading drummer is Trevor Clydesdale.

The band do not have their own hall so the members play in a number of venues around the town including the

Ballyvicknakelly Orange Hall, St Colman’s Catholic Church Hall and Dromore Rugby Club.

The band competed against 58 other bands at the Championships at the weekend.

“We are absolutely delighted with our success,” said member Gary McDonald. “We are now upgraded to 4A. There is a tremendous amount of comarardarie and support amongst the band members which we are proud of. One of the yongest members Jack Hall celebrated his 11th birthday on Sunday.”
