Master caster at Coburn’s open night

One of Ireland’s leading authorities on trout and salmon fishing made a guest appearance at an open night organised by James Coburn & Sons Ltd.

Respected author and Ireland’s first game angling instructor, Peter O’Reilly came to the open night in December. The event was organised as part of a special Christmas promotion for customers who had been entered into a free prize draw.

Talking about the event William Cochrane, shop manager, said: “We decided to invite Peter along because he is so well-known among the angling community. We have met him a number of times and he is familiar with the local anglers”.

Peter runs private casting lessons at Navan as well as fly-fishing courses at some of Ireland’s premier fisheries. Over the past three decades his client list includes beginners, seasoned anglers who want to sort out casting faults, stars of stage and screen, state dignitaries and sporting legends from all over the world.

As regards to gathering a few tips on fly-casting William said: “Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to get talking much to Peter that night because things were so busy, but I could do with all the tips I can get! Peter really is one of the master-casters”.

William said: “It was a great turn-out for such a bad night. At 6.30 no-one was there but then by 6.45 everybody suddenly seemed to come in - we were well chuffed. We were especially pleased that Peter travelled such a distance from Navan on such a bad night. He’s a true gentleman.

“We stock his books here in the shop and I always buy them directly from him as he autographs each one for us.”
