Man’s ‘stop and search’ challenge gets go-ahead

A Londonderry man who has been stopped and searched dozens of times under anti-terrorism legislation has cleared the first stage in his High Court challenge to the police practice.

Having succeeded in getting over the first legal hurdle, a case taken by Steven Ramsey is now expected to get underway in the New Year.

Mr Ramsey, who comes from the Creggan area of the city, was granted leave last week to seek a judicial review of powers used to repeatedly detain him.

Mr Steven believes there is precedence for getting the police operation against him declared unlawful.

His lawyers are set to rely on a ruling that similar operations which targeted a former IRA hunger striker and a brother-in-law of Martin McGuinness were unlawful. The case centres on stop and search actions carried out under the Justice and Security (NI) Act 2007. Mr Justice Treacy fixed the case for a full hearing in January.
