Man due in court after Shore Road police pursuit

A 28-year-old man is to appear in Belfast Magistrates Court this morning (Monday) following a police pursuit in Newtownabbey over the weekend.

The man and a 30-year-old woman were arrested following a police pursuit on the Shore Road in the early hours of Saturday morning (December 12).

Detective Inspector Stewart said: “A Mercedes car was signalled to stop at around 1.50am by officers carrying out increased anti-burglary patrols in the Skegoneill area. The car failed to stop and was pursued by a trained police pursuit driver for around 10 minutes, with the car finally being stopped at the Shore Road.

“Checks were carried out and the car was confirmed as having been stolen as a result of a burglary in East Belfast on Friday, December 11. A search of the vehicle uncovered items reported as stolen following a burglary in Newtownabbey, also on Friday.

“The male driver was arrested on suspicion of two counts of burglary, aggravated taking and driving away, no insurance, no licence and failing to stop for police. The female passenger was arrested on suspicion of two counts of burglary, aggravated taking and driving away and no insurance.”

The woman has been released from custody pending further enquiries.
