Gregory Curran (49), Cline Road, Banbridge, was fined £125 last Thursday at the local magistrates’ court for assault on police on September 8 this year.

He was also fined £25, with a £15 offender’s levy, for disorderly behaviour on the same date. The court heard that police received a report of a drunken male who had fallen and when they arrived they saw the defendant who was highly intoxicated and unsteady on his feet.

Police put him into their vehicle and took him to his mother’s address at Cline Road, Banbridge, but because of his inebriated condition she refused to take him.

It was decided to take him to his brother’s address but Curran became abusive to police and pushed an officer on the chest. He also made other attempts to assault the officer.

When arrested Curran said: “I’ll have you boy.”

A solicitor representing the defendant said he has difficulties with alcohol and he had been a complete nuisance to police on this night. He knew his behaviour was not acceptable.

He added that Curran was taking steps to address his problem and he had nothing previous for this type of offending.

District Judge Rosalie Prytherch said the defendant had been a complete nuisance and his behaviour was totally reprehensible.
