Man is addicted to diazepam court told

Kristian McVitty, whose address was given as Drumlin Drive, Lurgan, admitted unlawful possession of class B and class C drugs last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

The court heard that on August 12 last year a search was carried out at the defendant’s home and several drug seizures were made.

Herbal cannabis was found in the living room, bedroom and bathroom and inside the toilet bowl was a clear bag containing suspected herbal cannabis.

In the bathroom 270 10mg Diazepam tablets were found.

Also discovered was drug related paraphernalia including small plastic bags and a set of scales.

When interviewed McVitty denied any suggestion that he was supplying the drugs.

District Judge, Mrs Bernie Kelly, said that the quantity of drugs found would suggest intent to supply but the defendant had not been charged with that.

A prosecutor said McVitty would admit to being a regular user of cannabis and used the scales to weigh out his personal supplies into bags.

A barrister representing the defendant said McVitty was addicted to cannabis and Diazepam.

Judge Kelly said these were serious matters and that the defendant had failed to co-operate with probation in the preparation of a pre-sentence report.

She added that she had no option to certify the offences so serious there was only one sentence she could impose.

Sentencing McVitty to two months in prison on each charge the judge suspended the terms for two years.
