Looking back... Rotary Club offers help and advice to vulnerable residents

Carrick Rotary Club in conjunction with the Fold Housing Trust, launched a new service aimed at helping elderly and disabled people to improve, adapt or repair their homes.

The campaign, which was launched in March 1986, was called ‘Staying Put’.

It provided practical help and support for vulnerable residents in the Carrickfergus area.

Mr Ian Caters of the Rotary Club said: “Arranging home improvement repairs and taking up grants from the Housing Executive is an intricate and time consuming business.

The Rotary Club takes the strain away from the elderly householder by working with the Executive on the person’s behalf making the initial contact, filling out the countless forms, arranging surveys and so on.”

He added: “The club arranges for all of the work to be done, using only trusted contractors for the jobs.”

Meanwhile, that same month, the Rotary Club had recently sent a consignment of medicines to South Africa.

This was sent along with an emergency box of supplies.

This cargo was part of an ongoing campaign, with the local branch sending similar consignments in the past.
