Longer term residents improve English

Migrant workers and ethnic minority groups who participated in English language and local awareness classes were acknowledged by Derry City Council at a recent prizegiving ceremony.

The classes were delivered by the NW Academy of English thanks to funding from Derry City Council’s Community Relations Programme and were aimed at longer term local residents who don’t speak English as a first language.

Cllr John Boyle, Chair of the Policy and Resources Committee Derry City Council who represented the Mayor at the event said he was delighted to see so many different nationalities benefitting from this training programme.

Angela Askin, Community Relations Officer with Derry City Council, explained that the courses have been a tremendous success with 58 participants from 12 nationalities completing the courses and being awarded their certificates.
