This comes after a number of homes, over the weekend, were entered in the Katesbridge, Rathfriland and areas and in each of these incidents, entry was gained through an open window or door.

Six homes in the Alexander Mews and Alexander Park area of Katesbridge, Knockview Gardens, Carn Valley and Lissize Avenue areas of Rathfriland and the Mourne View area of Ballyward, were burgled. In one incident an occupant disturbed a male in their house at 6am and reported it to police after 11am.

This male is described as being approximately 5ft 10in tall, in his mid 20s, of medium build, clean shaven with black hair. He made off with a purse and got into a navy blue Vauxhall Vectra car.

Inspector Nigel Graham, Banbridge Neighbourhood and Response, said: “We say it over and over again, but we repeat it because it is so important - windows and doors should be closed and locked. Thieves are opportunists and an open window or door is exactly the type of opportunity they are looking for.

“We understand that the weather is getting warmer and there is a temptation to leave windows open at night but security should come first. It is also vitally important that you report all suspicious activity to us as soon as you become aware of it. Getting to a scene as early as possible presents us with the best forensic and investigative opportunities to find the people responsible and make them amenable.”

Anyone with information in relation to the burglaries is asked to contact police in Banbridge on the 101 non-emergency number.
