Local pupils win Environmental Youth Speak

Local school children from the Borough of Coleraine took part in the regional and grand finals of Environmental Youth Speak 2013 at the Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre, Limavady on Wednesday 14 March and won!

Now in its fifteenth year, Environmental Youth Speak is an annual public speaking competition open to pupils throughout Northern Ireland. It encourages environmental awareness among young people by giving them the opportunity to research and debate environmental issues.

Shreya Ghaie from DH Christie Memorial won the North West Junior Regional final for her speech on the topic “My waste’s got talent: what can it become?”.

Grace Richmond from Coleraine High School also represented Coleraine Borough Council at the regional and grand finals, and spoke on “The true cost of waste” winning the North West senior title.

Fiona Watters, Waste and Recycling Officer, who organised the Coleraine heat, said: “I was delighted to have Shreya and Grace representing Coleraine Borough Council at the Regional Finals. They did a fantastic job with their speeches. Congratulations to them both, especially to Shreya, on winning the North West Junior Regional Final. My thanks go to all the pupils, teachers and parents who put in such hard work to participate in Environmental Youth Speak.”
