Local author is full of clichés in his new book

A new book is due to be launched in Banbridge which is sure to have you falling off your seat laughing.

The author of the book, Co Down man Michael Wallace, has had a life-long fascination with phrases and has called his book ‘Every Sayin’ Under the Sun’ because he feels that nicely sums it up.

Michael, who grew up in Annaclone just outside Banbridge, said: “The book has really been a labour of love as I have been working on it for the past 4 to 5 years.

“I hadn’t got any sources for it, it was just combined from people I spoke to mostly from the Banbridge area. Whenever I heard a phrase which I had never come across before I would type it into my phone then that way I wouldn’t forget it”.

A member of the Annaclone Historical Society, Michael has had a lot of local input into the book. He said: “Local artist Judith Henning did the illustrations and Banbridge author Doreen McBride helped me with advice and proof reading”.

Talking about the book, Michael said: “We as a nation are obsessed with sayings and this book is a collection of the funniest and best known expressions there are. It focuses on a wide variety of themes such as threats, insults, comparisons, love and relationships, food and alcohol.

“Sayings tend to change depending on what part of the country you live in so there are many from all over Ireland, including ‘our-wee country’ Norn Iron, which it must be said are a breed of their own.

“There are over 2000 different sayings in the book and many the reader may not have heard before, so meanings have all been included to help them understand.

“This is the type of book which will cheer you up and be difficult to set down. There has already been a huge interest and it will certainly make a good Christmas present.”

The official launch is Sunday November 24 at 7.30pm in Banbridge but it will also be available on Amazon priced at £9.99 from November 23. Alternatively contact Michael on 07808 800909 or email [email protected].
