And they also discovered that the goods vehicle test certificate for the lorry had expired.

Ivan McKnight, Rock Meeting Road, Banbridge, was fined £50 and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy for the defective light offence.

He was also fined £50 for the absence of the test certificate.

Craigavon Magistrates Court heard last Friday that on February 3 this year police stopped the defendant driving a cattle lorry in William Street, Lurgan.

They noticed a rear light was defective and the test certificate had expired.

A solicitor representing McKnight said that her client owned a small farm.

She explained that he knew the light was defective and he was on his way to get it fixed.

As far as the certificate was concerned, she added, McKnight had simply overlooked it.

The vehicle was now off the road.

Imposing the fines Deputy District Judge Gerry Trainor said he would take into account the defendant’s age and his limited record.
