Legal action started in bins protest

And Drew Gregg, of the Bin Action Group (BAG) Say No to Banbridge Four Week Bin Collection, says the group has already started legal proceedings.

“Whatever happens now we will not be taking this lying down,” said Mr Gregg. “We are all good recyclers and we are in support of the fortnightly bin collection but are now expected to support a monthly collection. That is a big ask.

“This is our health, we are fighting for here. This four weekly collection scheme will encourage disease which is carried by flies, rats, mice and other vermin, it will attract all this to your back door and to your house, we must fight it.

“This has nothing to do with recycling, this is your general waste black bins which hold non-recyclable rubbish, the nappies and medical waste etc. Who ants a bin full of nappies sitting at their back door for four weeks? We certainly don’t.

“We ask for support in this campaign which we intend to carry through to a conclusion. That may involve Stormont Assembly, that may involve Westminster Parliament. It will most certainly involve legal action as well as a presentation to the NI Ombudsman.”

He said that the monthly collection is an ‘ill thought out’ plan and claimed that families who are recyclers are already struggling with the fortnightly collection.

The group met recently with a local MP and claim that they have support from councillors who will be part of the new ABC super council.

Mr Greg says that they are still in touch with the protestors in Wales and Manchester who are opposed to similar plans.

“We are planning to fight this all the way,” he inisisted.
