Katesbridge man was over the limit

A Katesbridge man has been fined and banned from the roads after pleading guilty to driving with excess alcohol.

David McBride (72) from Bellshill Road, Katesbridge appeared before Banbridge Magistrates Court last Thursday.

He came to police attention on 2 August at 6.19pm after officers received reports of a slow moving Volvo car near McCoy's garage, Katesbridge.

Officers spoke to McBride in the garage forecourt and they detected a smell of intoxicating liquor.

A breath test gave a reading of 41mgs of alcohol in 100 ml of breath.

Solicitor Mr Donnelly said his client had been driving for over 50 years and had a blemish on his record some 13 years ago.

Mr Donnelly said, "On the day in question he went for a meal and consumed a couple of drinks. He assumed he was safe to drive.

"This is not the highest reading but nevertheless he was over the limit. This will have a serious effect on his social life and on getting about."

District Judge Mr Paul Copeland directed that McBride's period of disqualification be reduced to nine months if he successfully completes the drink drive offenders course.
