'IRIS IS MORE OF A SINNER THAN US'

RECENT revelations concerning Iris Robinson's financial dealings and her affair with a teenager have sparked outrage among the district's gay community.

In 2008 the First Minister's wife described homosexuality as "an abomination", but now faces the wrath of gay groups across the country following her admission that she had cheated on her husband Peter with a 19-year-old man.

A spokesperson of the local Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) group, established in October 2008 to cover Banbridge and Craigavon, said the initial repsonse was one of disbelief of Mrs Robinson's apparent hypocrisy.

The spokesperson told the Leader, "While Iris Robinson had the audacity to call gays "an abomination" she was having an adulterous affair with a very young man whom she has known since he was nine.

"Doesn't that make her more of a sinner than us? Iris has cheated on her husband, and lied to him, her children and the general public.

"We have only had civil partnerships since 2005 and to us marriage is something we have long awaited.

"For us to destroy the sanctity of marriage would be an abomination."

Speaking passionately on the issue, the LGBT leader welcomed news that Mrs Robinson was expelled from her party but called for further action.

"She has abused her authority," said the spokesperson.

"Mrs Robinson has obviously abused her role and should be thrown out of government as an MP and MLA."
