Historical Society outing is planned

There are a few spaces left on the bus for what promises to be a fantastic day out.

Members of the society have arranged to meet at the Halfway House at 9 15am after which they will set out for Sentry Hill, which is near Newtownabbey. Tea, coffee and scones will be on served on arrival.

Sentry Hill belonged to the McKinney family during the 19th and early 20th Centuries.

It has been perfectly preserved and gives an extraordinary insight into life at that time.

The McKinneys’, like many others of the time were avid collectors so many strange and wonderful things such as an armadillo basket. Egyptian figures, a Bastille Jug,and a selection of shells are on display.

It is also possible to see a WW 1 handbook, a war letter, receipts and other ephemera.

The next part of the outing, a visit to The Nomadic offers a complete contrast to Sentry Hill. The Nomadic, which is a last remaining link to The Titanic. It was originally the tender which took passengers from Cherbourg tout to the Titanic.

She has been restored to her original glory and is back home in Belfast’s historic Hamilton Dock.

The cost of the outing, which includes all transport, entry fees, morning coffee and dinner at the Halfway House is £30.
