A young Lisburn girl is donating her hair to charity in memory of her mum’s cousin, who passed away last month after a battle with Leukaemia.
Fifteen-year-old Zoe Jefferson is getting her hair cut off next Saturday and donating it to the Little Princess Trust.
The Little Princess Trust provides real-hair wigs to boys and girls across the UK and Ireland that have sadly lost their own hair as a result of cancer treatment.
The family were left heartbroken when courageous Rebecca Haughey passed away in September following a battle with cancer.
Rebecca, from Lurgan, was a sixth form pupil at St Catherine’s College, Armagh, and a former member of Moyraverty Arts and Drama Society (MAD).
The appointment is on Saturday, October 22 and not only is Zoe donating hair to the charity, but she has also set up a Just Giving page to raise funds for the Trust.
Zoe’s mum, Louise told the Star that this is a nice way to help a charity and remember Rebecca. She said: “Zoe has really long hair so it is going to be a big change for her getting it all cut off.
“This is something she really wanted to do, she has been growing her hair for a while and it is very long so I do think she is a bit nervous about what it is going to look like.
“She does like to have long hair, but it is going to a very good cause.
“We have seen at first hand how important this charity is - this hair will be going to other children and it will benefit them.
“The difference it made to Rebecca was important, especially with her confidence. It is a nice way to remember her and help other people in similar situations.”
On her Just Giving page, Friends’ pupil Zoe said: “I have had long hair for quite a while, and I have decided to have it cut so that someone else will hopefully benefit from it.
“There isn’t much I can do to help, but I do have a good 16 inches of hair that I could donate to be turned into wigs.
“I have decided to try and raise some money for this wonderful charity so any donations will be wholeheartedly and gratefully received.”
