Games Maker Andrea can’t wait to get to work at Olympics

AS the countdown to London 2012 reaches it’s conclusion the volunteers involved in making the Games run smoothly are making their final preparations.

One of those ‘Games Makers’, Andrea Heslip, heads off this weekend to London to help out as part of the Royal Events team, helping out in the likes of Hyde Park, the Mall and Greenwich Park.

An athlete herself, Andrea has been selected from thousands of applicants to help out at the Games.

With hundreds of spectators expected to travel to the events she has a busy couple of weeks ahead.

“I’ll be helping out at the 20K and 50K walks, the marathon and the road cycling,” she said.

“I’m looking forward in particular to seeing the marathon as that’s my event as it will be a great chance to see top class athletes in action.

“One of the other events I’ll be helping out at is the cross country equestrianism. I’m looking forward to seeing that as well because it’s something different from what I’m used to seeing, plus there’s a good chance I’ll get to see Zara Phillips in action as well because she is part of Team GB.”

Andrea is going to be busy throughout the two weeks of the game. Her duties include such diverse roles as a call steward checking the athletes’ numbers and equipment, escorting them to the stadium, team and media information centre, team leader for the athletics field of play at Olympic Stadium and marshalling for the marathon.

She will be heading over to the Games this weekend and will be utilising her numerous skills in helping to provide a smooth running and memorable Games for both the athletes and the spectators.

All of the Games Makers have been through a rigorous selection process as well as completing training programmes in London and will be an important part in the Games.

“I’ve been over to London already to pick up my uniform and I’ve been very impressed with the set-up,” she added.

“The Olympic Stadium looks magnificent, as does the rest of the Olympic Park, and I can’t wait to see what all the other arenas are going to look like.”
