Former Newry Street man passes away

PROFOUND sorrow spread over a wide area when it was learned of the passing of Mr John Matier, 43 Tollymore Road, Newcastle, at Belfast City Hospital on Monday, May 10.

John, who was a man of a friendly disposition and upright character, had been ill for some time when he was diagnosed with cancer but he bore his illness with great fortitude.

He was the dearly loved husband of Hilda whom he married on March 19, 1952. They were married in Holy Trinity Parish Church and set up home in Newry Street.

He worked in Cowdy’s Millmount Factory, serving his time as a millwright. They then moved to Knock where he worked in Scirocco for 40 years, working as a drafts man and then as a works manager until his retirement.

He was a member of Belvoir Park Golf Club and also of Mourne Golf Club and joined Mourne Indoor Bowling Club when he retired to live in Newcastle.

He enjoyed his home and while health permitted he worked around his home and garden. He was a member of Newcastle Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife Hilda; two daughters, Lynne and Hilary; one son-in-law, William; two grandchildren, Jonathan and Julia; great granddaughter, Freya; and one brother, Ronnie. To these and all other relatives sincere sympathy has been extended.

The funeral took place from his home for cremation at Roselawn Crematorium on Friday May 14. The Rev. R Robinson conducted the services for his minister, the Rev Ivan Patterson, at the home and in the Cremetorium.

The hymns, ‘Dear Lord and Father of Mankind’ and R’ock of Ages Cleft for Me’ were sung. Donations in lieu of flowers are being sent to William Bell and Co Funeral Directors, 23 Kenlis Street, Banbridge, BT32 3LR for Macmillan Nurses.

William Bell and Co had charge of the funeral arrangements.
