Six pumping engines and three specialist appliances had to be called in to deal with the fire when the alarm at Stanfield (NI) Ltd, a builders merchant’s premises, was raised just before 3.30pm on Sunday.

Speaking at the scene, senior fire officer Randy McComb said: “We have 40 to 50 officers fighting the blaze.

“There was a lot of combustibles there, including a lot of timber so it was a big fire.

“The roof of the building has partially collapsed and it may be totally destroyed,” he said.

Fire Officers brought the blaze under control in a couple of hours, but continued working for a time to put it out completely.

There were no reports of any injuries and the cause of the fire is not as yet clear.

Police also attended the scene and the Dromore Road was closed for a time with diversions in place.
