Family tell how child’s death saved others

A local donor family have shared their heart breaking story about the loss of their six-year-old son who went on to help save the lives of four others.

‘Speak up and Save a Life’ run by the Southern Trust is an organ donation campaign aimed at raising awareness of the issue of organ donation in Northern Ireland.

In the last two years the Trust has been able to pass on the gift of life to a total of 40 people who received life changing transplants.

“Just before Christmas in 2007, our beloved son was involved in a collision,” said the boy’s father, who did not want to be named. “He did not die in vain, as parents we decided, after seeing a poster in the hospital about organ donors, that we would donate his organs.

“We felt that in life, our wee boy cared about people who were poor, hungry and sick. “His ambition was to be a superhero, the little boy who saved lives. He gave the ultimate Christmas gift to four families waiting for a miracle, the gift of hope and life through organ donation.

“As a family we support the Public Health Agency campaign.

Whether you have signed the NHS Organ Donor Register or not, your family will make the final decision on donating organs.
