Family are flying high in Kenco final

A FAMILY day trip to the zoo could pave the way for a holiday to New York for one lucky Banbridge family.

Nine-year-old Harry Lockhart is representing Ireland in the final of the Kenco Young Eco Designer 2010, after entering by chance when he came across the competition during a holiday outing to Chester Zoo.

The Abercorn pupil’s idea to recycle old Kenco coffee refill packets to make a kite, was chosen from hundreds of entries and the Banbridge boy has made it all the way through to the final 12.

Harry’s dad Jim, whose family is now in with a chance of winning an all-expenses paid trip to New York city to see the winning design being manufactured, said they have their fingers crossed.

“It was just by chance that we came across the competition over Easter during a trip to Chester Zoo,” said Jim.

“Harry and Katie both entered - with Katie making it to the semi-final and Harry making it into the final 12.

“To be honest we hadn’t thought much about it until we got the letter a few days ago saying Harry was in with a chance.”

An added bonus for the family was the chance to meet television star Ben Fogle who is heading the competition.

Jim said, “He was very friendly and the kids got a picture with him, but I think most of the mothers seemed more impressed by him than the children!”

Harry, his sister Katie (7) and parents Jim and Sarah are urging Leader readers to vote for the kite design by visiting the Kenco website at www.kenco.co.uk. Voting closes on May 25.
