Weir to be removed in Donaghcloney

The remaining weir at Donaghcloney will be removed with any material being retained within the existing river channel.

The scheme is one eight successful projects throughout Northern Ireland which will share up to £62,435 to improve water quality in their area.

The new competitive grant scheme was open to voluntary and community groups, local councils and other not-for-profit organisations. The funding, provided by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) will be awarded before the end of the current financial year.

Announcing the awards, Minister Attwood said: “These awards are a win-win for the environment. By harnessing a community’s local knowledge these grants can make a positive and targeted difference to improve and protect the rivers and the wider water environment in these areas. Local projects led by local people working to enhance water - one of our key natural assets.

“I have said repeatedly that our built and natural heritage will be the biggest part of future increases in tourist numbers and spend. Cleaner, less polluted rivers and waterways will have a key part to play in that. Enhancing the state of our rivers and lakes will lead to improved fishing and increased recreational opportunities. These benefits will directly support tourism and also deliver health and social benefits for local communities.
